- Lineage and Origin: The origin of this strain dates back to 1913 when H. Bagg acquired albino stock, subsequently referred to as the “Bagg albino” or BALB. In 1923, it underwent inbreeding by MacDowell at Cold Spring Harbor, NY, USA. In 1932, at F26, it was transferred to Snell, who introduced the ‘c’ designation for albino.
Acquired by the Laboratory Animals Centre in Carshalton from the Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, ME, USA in 1955. It was then transferred to the Clinical Research Centre in Harrow and later to Olac in 1976. Eventually, it came under the ownership of Harlan through the acquisition of Olac. In 2023, Harlan Laboratories regained independent status.
