Developed by Dr. Carl Hansen of the NIH Genetic Resource. N:NIH Swiss outbred mice (albino) were crossed to C57BL/6N (black, non-agouti) mice to generate a hybrid black mouse that was heterozygous for the agouti locus. Through a series of test matings and backcrosses (N10) to the N:NIH(S) strain, the agouti gene was eliminated
Characteristics
• Bred in isolators and therefore free of opportunistic bacteria to
include; Klebsiella spp, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus
aereus and Proteus spp.
• Docile disposition
• Excellent reproductive performance and maternal characteristics
Research Use
• Due to it’s outbred background, this black Swiss stock is the ideal
model for use as sentinel in health surveillance programs as described
by FELASA
• Used as pseudo-pregnant recipient for albino lines
